FC Schalke 04 ended its 2016 campaign with a loss against Hamburger SV.
After a cagey first out of the match, it was Hamburg who made the breakthrough when Nicolai Muller opened the scoring on the counter attack.
With eight minutes to go the lead was doubled, Bobby Wood adding a second for HSV to put the home side in the box seat.
Ultimately it proved to be enough, a late Donis Avdijaj goal – his first in the Bundesliga – only a consolation as Schalke was resigned to a loss to finish the calendar year.
Schalke’s next Bundesliga match is on January 21.
