Real Madrid CF wins UEFA Super Cup

After defending the UEFA Champions League two months ago, Real Madrid CF were also able to retain the UEFA Super Cup trophy as they beat Europa League winners Manchester United 2-1 on Tuesday evening.

In front of 35,000 spectators in Skopje, Macedonia, Real Madrid dominated from the start and were on the verge of taking an early lead when Gareth Bale’s shot from close range went over the bar and Casemiro’s diving header hit the crossbar. However, after a quarter of an hour, the Brazilian was successful when he managed to slid Carvajal’s cross into the bottom left corner.

Even for long periods of the second half, Real were the better team and extended the lead when Isco made it 2-0 after 51 minutes. It was not until then that the “Red Devils“ were shaken up: First, Pogba and Lukaku squandered big opportunities, then Manchester‘s new signing tapped in to make it 2-1.

Despite a last foray by United in the closing stages, Real Madrid were able to protect the narrow lead to the end.
